We Love You Earth!

Happy Earth Day!  Growing up in Colorado, there is no shortage of love for this beautiful green earth.  We get to enjoy the outdoors more than others due to our 300 days of sunshine, and we have plenty of options when it comes to spending time with mother nature.

So, how to celebrate Earth Day you ask?  Here are some helpful tips to make your day a little greener.

  1. Eat local.  We have plenty of grocers that carry local foods for grab and go. You can enjoy nut butter from Earth Balance Farms, located up i25 in Longmont, CO.  Get a spoon and dig into some Glacier Homemade Ice Cream straight from Boulder, CO. Sweeten your cup of tea with some honey from Busy Bee Farm in Larkspur, CO.  If none of these sound appealing, you can also imbibe in a locally crafted beer at one of our many breweries… I don’t think anyone would be opposed to that!

  1. Ride your bike or walk to work.  You can find the best route to bike to work here.   If this just isn’t an option, make yourself take a lunch break to get outside and enjoy the weather (if there isn’t an unexpected blizzard).  If you do these things already, add a leisurely bike ride onto your day.  Be daring and strap those old roller blades on and hit the pavement in Wash Park.  You would be surprised how many happy memories will pop up from the good old days at Skate City.

  1. Cut down on your waste.  An old friend and Colorado Native Stevie Van Horn was recently featured in Glamour Magazine for her efforts towards living a trash-free life.  Focusing on reusing items in your life, and cutting back on your waste will minimize your carbon footprint, which we should all be more mindful about.

  1. Go meatless.  Studies show the environmental impact the meat industry has on the earth is substantial.  You don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian by any means (I understand, I love me some chicken wings) but maybe consider taking it out of your diet weekly. And if that seems too extreme, just do it tomorrow in honor of Earth Day.  Learn more here.

  1. Forget hygiene for the day.   It is a true and worthy tribute to Earth Day.  Plus, hippy-chic is all the rage these days. Re-wear unwashed clothes, save water.  Skip the morning shower, save water.  If anyone calls you out on your unusual appearance just reply, “I am being kind to the earth today by saving water, and my stench is my witness.”  You just might make someone laugh, and laughter is good for the world too.
